Why the Howard pacific solution was a complete failure
« on: August 13, 2012, 01:52:45 PM »
Howard's pacific 'solution' was a complete and utter failure of a policy and it is an indication of how useless Tony Abbott would be as a leader of this country. Abbott wants to reinstate failed and racist policy, he is simply unelectable.

The 'pacific solution' was a perscription for mental illness, forced asylum seekers to wait in detention for ages to be processed, saw kids behind bars/razor wire, saw illegal/racist and extremely dangerous turn back of boats, saw the 'children overboard' debacle, and basically just submitted to the will of the racist scum in this country who would rather we didn't help people in need. Howard's failure was simply an attempt to bandaid fix a problem which needs a much wider solution (just as the libs broadband policy is a bandaid fix rather than the complete solution the NBN provides).

Treating asylum seekers in need like prisoners is no way to help people and it doesn't help 'stop the boats' people wouldnt need to get on a boat at all if there was actually a regional solution where they had a fair chance of getting their asylum claims processed.

The greens have the right policy on this, the libs and labor are just playing politics as usual with the issue.

Shameful day for Australia. So proud of Bandt and Wilkie for standing up for human rights today while the rest of the house Of reps supported racist off shore discrimination of asylum seekers. People who come by boat shouldn't get an unfair advantage, but at the same time they shouldn't be disadvantaged either. There is already a HUGE deterrent to coming by boat - risk of drowning. The only deterrent strong enough to counter the push factors (war, extreme sexism against women, extreme poverty, etc...) would be to treat the asylum seekers worse than that. The point is no matter where or how these people are processed, it will always be a better option than staying where they are. Instead of punishing vulnerable people once they have already gotten on a boat we should be persuading them to come the safer way (by plane).

What a stupid thing to say! Of course I don't want people to die in boats! I'd much rather people didn't need to get on a boat in the first place and had a fair chance of getting their asylum claims processed! That's my entire point!

Howard should be in prison for war crimes. He's responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths along with Bush and Blair.
