National plan mooted to counter foot and mouth

Bob Katter

I plead with the Federal Agriculture Minister Murray Watt for an $80m eradication program to fix this problem of foot and mouth disease at its source.

This announcement of new state and territory bio security plans to “manage outbreaks” will be too little, too late.

There is no way of keeping it out of Australia if it’s endemic in Indonesia. So it’s a nice bloody attitude when the minister is accepting that it’s going to get into Australia and we’ve got all these programs in Australia, too late if it gets into Australia.

And talk about cutting off Australian tourism to Bali would be an act of economic suicide.

The cattle industry is worth an estimated $4bn in tax revenue per year, which could be protected with an expenditure of $80m for an eradication program. We plead with the minister and the government to send the money up there on condition that Indonesia puts some money in.

Please minister: $80m for an eradication program in Indonesia.
