New trade opportunities with the UK for Aussie producers

Aussie producers, agricultural importers and exporters have exciting new trade opportunities with the Australia-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement (A-UK FTA) entering into force today.

The elimination of tariffs on 99% of Australian goods exported to the UK, including a number of Australian farm exports, will see Australian producers and agricultural exporters enjoy the best access to the UK since the 1970s.

The deal includes the immediate elimination of all tariffs on:

  • wine
  • majority of seafood (including tariffs on all finfish)
  • short and medium-grain rice
  • honey
  • olive oil
  • nuts
  • majority of fruit and vegetables (including onions, oranges and grapes)

Duty-free transitional quotas will also be established for:

  • beef
  • sheep meat
  • sugar
  • wheat and meslin
  • barley
  • dairy including cheese and butter
  • long grain and broken rice

Within 10 years, tariffs on agricultural goods under the FTA will be completely eliminated.

Improved market access to an otherwise premium and highly protected UK market gives Australian farmers more opportunities to provide sustainable, high-quality agricultural produce to British consumers and a strong competitive advantage over other trading partners.

Second only to Australia’s FTA with New Zealand, The A-UK FTA is the most comprehensive agreement Australia has signed with any trading partner.
