Local grants for local projects in Central Wheatbelt

The successful recipients of the latest round of Mia’s Local Hero Grants have been announced, with thirty-one groups in the electorate of Central Wheatbelt receiving up to $200 each toward projects and initiatives in their community.

The popular grant scheme was established in 2020 to help support local community groups based in the electorate of Central Wheatbelt and has delivered over $45,000 in microgrants in total.

“The fund is targeted toward local community groups with small but meaningful grants that assist them run events, pay for equipment, buy supplies or host visitors to the region to coach or speak at forums,” Ms Davies said.

“These groups support and enrich our local communities and the grant is my way of supporting that important work.”

Ms Davies said the Local Hero Grants program received many worthy applications and due to the popularity of the fund were not able to fund everyone in this round.

She said successful applicants included the Northam Regional Gym, Koorda Community Garden, Kellerberrin Playgroup, Bulyee Community Hall, and Quairading Rainmakers.

“I’ll be dropping in to see some of these organisations as I travel around the electorate after Parliament rises for the year and I look forward to catching up on the great work they do,” she said.

“Projects like the Nungarin Art Gallery’s Studio Artistique which provides art workshop programs, have applied to assist people with costs so they can attend the classes.

“The York4York group will put the funds toward the free three course meal they provide for those experiencing loss, loneliness, homelessness or poverty on Christmas Day.”

Ms Davies said each applicant was doing something to connect, nurture and support a strong community in the Wheatbelt.

“There will be additional rounds announced next year, so if you missed this round, I’d encourage you to apply when we re-open another,” she said.
