Sandy tourist spot needs balanced plan for the future
Member for Moore Shane Love has called on the McGowan Labor Government to present a balanced plan for the future of Lancelin.
Mr Love said the iconic tourist hotspot had entered the spotlight following recent concerns regarding mining in nearby sand dunes.
“The Lancelin Sand Dunes is an iconic attraction with thousands of adventure-enthusiasts travelling to the region to 4-wheel-drive and sand-board over the sandy hills,” Mr Love said.
“At the same time, lime sand is a valuable resource for farmers to balance the pH levels of soil that has been treated with fertiliser.
“Given the sensitivity of this issue, I’m calling on the Minister for Mines and Petroleum and the Tourism and Environment Ministers to visit the dunes.
“There needs to be a resolution which benefits all of the stakeholders involved and ensures a strong future for the Lancelin community and provides a lime sand source for farmers.”
Mr Love said this has been a longstanding issue in his electorate and the McGowan Labor Government must put their heads together to come up with a viable solution.
“When we were in Government, we devised the Wheatbelt Lime Strategy which considers each of the impacted sectors, but the plan was unceremoniously thrown out by the McGowan Labor Government when they came to power.
“This is not an issue that can be ignored by all of the Ministers involved, a bipartisan approach is necessary to create a balanced approach to the issue.”
Mr Love reiterated his invitation for the McGowan Labor Government to visit Lancelin and called for a timeline to be put in place.
“It is a delicate balance of the interest of miners, farmers and tourists that needs to be struck and the first step to achieving this is consultation,” Mr Love said.
“The relevant Ministers must come up to the region, engage with the community on this issue, and work collaboratively with all involved to find a solution.”
