$1.3 Million To Restore South Grafton’s Cultural Heart
The Pelican Playhouse in South Grafton has been awarded almost $1.3 million in funding through the NSW Government’s Towns and Villages Resilient Business Activation Program.
It’s one of 21 projects across the Northern Rivers to benefit from the initiative, which is designed to support economic and social recovery in flood-affected communities.
Nationals Member for Clarence Richie Williamson has warmly welcomed the announcement, commending the dedication of the Pelican Playhouse Committee and recognising their vital role in the Clarence Valley’s cultural landscape.
“This is outstanding news, and I’m absolutely delighted for the Pelican Playhouse Committee, who put in a huge amount of work to secure this funding,” Mr Williamson said.
“They are very worthy recipients and this investment will help bring back a vibrant and vital part of the Clarence Valley’s cultural life. The Pelican Playhouse is not just a performance venue, but a treasured community institution.
“This funding is an investment in South Grafton’s future and a major step forward in the town’s flood recovery,” he said.
Established in 1946, the Pelican Playhouse has been a cornerstone of creativity and community in South Grafton for nearly 80 years. More than just a theatre, it has served as a hub for collaboration with local businesses, artists, and community groups-driving both social and economic activity in the region.
The devastating 2022 floods caused significant damage to the facility, placing overwhelming financial strain on the volunteer-run committee. The grant will allow the Playhouse to repair its infrastructure and enhance its resilience to future flood events, restoring a valued space for artistic expression, education, and community gatherings.
President of the Pelican Playhouse, Angela Clarke, said the Committee is over the moon with the announcement after a number of challenges for the theatre and the volunteers behind it.
“We are thrilled to get the ball rolling to bring the stage alive again with music and performers from the Clarence Valley and touring artists from further afield,” she said. “We look forward to welcoming everyone back into the theatre!”
