$1.5 Million To Support ‘Stop Coward Punch’
An elected Dutton Coalition Government will invest $1.5 million to support the Stop the Coward Punch campaign and its efforts to reduce violence in our communities.
The Coward Punch Campaign was founded in 2012 by Australian world boxing champion Danny Green to raise awareness about the devastating effects the coward punch has on victims and their families.
The Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Peter Dutton MP, who was in Perth to announce the measure and meet with Danny Green, said this commitment was part of the Coalition’s plan to protect Australians.
“Part of our plan to get Australia back on track is about keeping Australia safe – safe for families, safe for businesses, and safe for communities.
“All too often we see the tragic consequences of cowardly and needless violence on our streets. Danny and his team are saving lives through this campaign, and I am proud to support the incredible work they are doing through this funding contribution.”
The Shadow Attorney-General, Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash, said “Since the year 2000, more than 170 Australians have lost their lives to coward punches. Countless others have been left devastated by these attacks.
“The Stop the Coward Punch campaign helps educate young people about positive behaviour and reduce unprovoked violence that often has tragic consequences.”
Previously known as a ‘king-hit’ or a ‘one-punch,’ a coward punch is defined as a strike that is unprovoked and delivered without warning.
This announcement comes after the former Coalition Government provided a $1 million grant from Proceeds of Crime to the Stop the Coward Punch Campaign in 2022.
This commitment is part of the Coalition’s plan to keep Australians safe and get our country back on track.
