$3.4 Million Confirmed For Water Science Projects In NT

Senator The Hon Murray Watt, Minister for the Environment and Water

The Hon Joshua Burgoyne MLA, NT Minister for Water Resources

The Albanese Government and Northern Territory Government are working together to deliver two new water science projects to help plan and manage water in the Territory for generations to come.

The projects contribute to our understanding of how water is managed for future security, based on the specific location of the water in the environment.

A managed aquifer recharge (MAR) scheme will focus on initial work to trial a recharge program, to increase water storage and improve water quality for the Katherine region.

This scheme will capture excess flows in the King River during the wet season and store the water in the Katherine Tindall Limestone aquifer to use during drier times.

Fully funded by the Australian Government, through the National Water Grid Fund, this project features several research and testing activities, including drilling and installation of recharge and monitoring bores.

In Mparntwe (Alice Springs), an aquifer protection study will be carried out to existing aquifers which supply water to the town to assess current and future risks posed by population growth and environmental change.

This project will inform the most appropriate type and location of future developments in order to best support the area and minimise risk to the quality of water.

Outcomes from this project will inform the Northern Territory Planning Commission’s South of the Gap subregional Land Use Plan.

This project is jointly funded by the Australian Government, through the National Water Grid Fund, and the Northern Territory Government.

Federal Minister for the Environment and Water, Murray Watt, said he is pleased to confirm funding for science projects that can help increase water security for Northern Territory communities.

“We are investing in projects that will ensure we make the best decisions possible when it comes to managing and planning for our water,” Minister Watt said.

“These projects will help inform a way forward, based on evidence and responsible investment, and our unwavering commitment to sustainable outcomes – not only for the Territory – but also Australia.”

Northern Territory Minister for Water Resources, Joshua Burgoyne, said investing in water science projects will ultimately benefit all Territorians.

“Thanks to co-investment with the National Water Grid, the NT Government can continue significant investments in science, which underpins all decisions on water management and allocation in the Territory and ensures it can be managed responsibly long into the future as the Territory grows its economy,” Minister Burgoyne said.
