$630K Boost for Queensland-Bavaria Research

From aerospace to quantum technology to artificial intelligence (AI), Queensland researchers are being supported to work with their German counterparts to tackle complex issues under a partnership between the Queensland and Bavarian Governments.

The latest round of grants under the prestigious Queensland–Bavaria Collaborative Research Program is now open, offering up to $630,000 in funding from the Queensland Government for innovative research projects.

This joint initiative enhances the international standing of both Queensland and Bavarian science, strengthening local research capacity and fostering the growth of emerging industries in both regions.

The collaboration program contributes to the Queensland Government commitment to foster new opportunities for economic growth through advancement and increased productivity through science and innovation.

Under the program, Seed Grants will grow new or existing partnerships between Queensland and Bavaria, while Development Grants will support the next phase of these projects.

Both grant categories focus on developing emerging and priority industries including pilot programs and proof-of-concept initiatives.

Under the Seed Grants program, up to ten successful Queensland applicants can receive grants of up to $8000, while up to five Queensland recipients will share in up to $110,000 in funding under the Development Grants round. Corresponding successful Bavarian applicants are also eligible to receive funding from the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts (StMWK).

Queensland Chief Scientist Professor Kerrie Wilson said international collaboration in science is a cornerstone of a thriving research ecosystem, utilising the strengths and capabilities across the world to obtain and apply new knowledge.

“The Queensland–Bavaria Collaborative Research Program bridges the gap – literally and figuratively – between some of the top research institutions in the world.

“By combining forces and forging partnerships through this program, we can further elevate the international reputation of our research institutions for producing high quality, innovative solutions to our shared challenges and ambitions.

“I am excited to see the groundbreaking research projects supported through this program, aligning with the Future Queensland Science Strategy to promote innovation, tackle global challenges and establish Queensland as a hub for scientific excellence.”

Chairman of the Board of Universität Bayern e.V., Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible echoed the Queensland Chief Scientist’s sentiments, stating that the Queensland–Bavaria Research Alliance presents a unique opportunity for international cooperation, shared scientific exchanges, and innovative research projects in joint priority areas.

“We can only solve the central challenges of our time together – with our global partners, with industry and with the support of Government.”

Chairman of the Board of Hochschule Bayern e.V., Prof. Dr Walter Schober also underscored the significance of the Queensland–Bavaria Research Alliance in bridging diverse cultural and scientific approaches.

“Collaboration between regions with such rich cultural and scientific histories opens up new pathways for creative solutions, fostering innovations which neither region could achieve alone.”

Member of the Executive Board, Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Munich and Upper Bavaria Christoph Angerbauer highlighted the value of innovation and international collaboration in the Queensland–Bavaria Collaborative Research Program.

“The first round of funding has already demonstrated how research and industry can collaborate to drive innovation, and I am confident that the next round will produce cutting-edge projects that translate research into practical solutions, further advancing the economies of both regions.”
