ACCU Tests New Savanna Fire Management Tool
Australia is taking big steps to manage wildfires to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its vast savanna landscapes. Two new savanna fire management methods are in development under the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) Scheme.
These methods will support projects to reduce emissions by using fires earlier in the dry season. This approach helps prevent larger and more destructive wildfires later on.
Savannas are open grasslands scattered with small trees and shrubs. Their tropical climate brings wet and dry seasons. Dry vegetation mixed with hot, windy weather makes late-season wildfires a real threat.
To support these fire management methods, the department is releasing the Savanna Carbon Accounting Model (SavCAM). This online tool will support project operators to calculate abatement associated with their fire management efforts under the new methods when they are available for use.
We want your feedback to make sure the SavCAM tool is effective and easy to use. This feedback will help refine the tool and finalise development of the new methods. Step-by-step instructions are provided for users.
Stay tuned for more updates as public consultation on the new proposed methods kicks off later in 2025.
