It was powerful to hear Behrouz Boochani give an address in Federal Australian Parliament today, after Peter Dutton claimed Behrouz would never set foot in this country in 2019.
Today he urged the Federal Labor Government to support Senator Nick McKim’s Evacuation to Safety Bill and demand a Royal Commission into offshore detention.
If passed, the Greens bill would offer immediate evacuation to the over 150 refugees still held in offshore on PNG and Nauru, giving them the right to come to Australia while they pursue resettlement options.
We can’t take back the cruel treatment endured by Behrouz and all those detained in offshore processing. But if Labor support this bill, we could finally free his brothers who remain in these torture camps, and get one step closer to closing them for good.
