I’m so relieved that the Nadesalingam family have finally been granted permanent visas.

They’re finally free and home in Biloela. Congratulations Priya, Nades, Kopi & Tharni. This day is yours.

They never should have gone through this ordeal, and there are still thousands of refugees across this country that remain in detention or live in fear of being deported at a moment’s notice.

We cannot pick & choose when we act with compassion to those who’ve sought our care.

Labor & the Liberals are the architects and the proponents of this cruel & brutal policy. Now we must dismantle it. It has to end.

I’d implore the Government to listen to Priya’s words: “Please no more life in detention. It is not suitable for any human being.”

“All refugees are survivors. They need hope. I had the support of Nades and we had the support of the people of Bilo. But many others don’t have that support. So I want to help.”

It’s long past the time the compassion in our communities was reflected in the policies of our Government.

Close the camps.

End the torture.

Let them live.

Let them be free.
