Adam Bandt

Over the past few weeks we’ve been working hard to secure improvements to Labor’s weak climate bill, and today it has passed the Lower House with Greens support.

We said from the start that we wanted to improve and pass the bill, and by pushing for important changes we have got Labor to agree to do more.

The Greens ensured that the target is a floor not a ceiling, and that the Bill is “Dutton proofed” from future Governments.

We also made it harder to fund coal & gas by applying the target to many government agencies, and ensured greater transparency & accountability on the Climate Change Authority which will advise on climate targets.

Disappointingly, Labor teamed up with the Liberals to vote against Greens amendments to increase the target to 75% and to stop new coal & gas mines. You cannot put the fire out while you continue to pour fuel on it.

This is a climate parliament, the only thing standing in the way of more action is Labor and their fossil fuel donors.

The fight to stop new coal and gas is the battle of the century and the battle of our lives and we need everyone to be in it.

We’ll continue to fight at every opportunity.
