I’m proud to be fighting for the millions of people who are being left behind by the housing crisis. Those struggling to pay the rent or buy a house, stuck on waitlists, or homeless.
That’s why the Greens will start negotiating with the Federal Government over their Housing Australia Future Fund bill due to be introduced sometime this year.
Labor’s plan to build 6000 public, community and affordable homes is nowhere near enough to meet the 520,000 that we need, so we’ll seek to negotiate significant improvements to Labor’s plan.
We want to see Labor commit to:
1) build 275,000 well designed public, community and affordable homes over the next five years
2) introduce a national 2 year rent freeze as part of new national tenancy standards, and
3) invest $5 billion in maintenance and upgrades for existing public housing, to improve accessibility, energy efficiency, and ensure better heating and cooling
We are ready to negotiate in good faith to get the public, community and affordable housing Australia desperately needs, and some real, meaningful national protections for renters.
