Alice Springs Launches New Social Housing Project

The Finocchiaro CLP Government has reinforced its commitment to providing greater support for Territorians in need of social housing.

Construction will commence on five new homes in Alice Springs as part of a project to deliver up to 100 new social housing properties across the Northern Territory.

Today, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Community Development Steve Edgington, Treasurer Bill Yan and the Minister for Lands, Planning and the Environment Josh Burgoyne, attended a sod-turning event in Gillen to mark the official start of building work in Alice Springs.

“These new homes in Alice Springs will provide safe, secure housing for low-income households while also creating job opportunities for local workers during construction,” said Mr Edgington.

The Northern Territory has received $50 million from the Federal Government’s Social Housing Accelerator Payment (SHAP) funding to support the construction of these homes over the next five years.

Of this, $12.5 million has been allocated to Community Housing Providers, with the remainder managed by the CLP Government to build the homes.

Mr Yan said getting more people into safe and affordable housing was a key priority, and these strong partnerships allow us to deliver more for our communities.

“By working with long-standing community housing providers like CHCA, this funding is becoming real, on-the-ground results-ensuring more people have access to safe, secure housing when they need it most,” said Mr Yan.

Community Housing Central Australia (CHCA) successfully applied for SHAP funding to deliver five new properties in Gillen, featuring 3 one-bedroom homes on Nicker Crescent and 2 two-bedroom dwellings in Ashwin Street.

CEO of CHCA, Frances Paterson-Fleider, said they were delighted to secure the funding for the delivery of 3 one-bedroom homes and 2 two-bedroom dwellings in Gillen.

“This project will deliver around $2.5 million in direct investment into housing while generating benefits to the local economy via the construction program and creating local jobs,” she said.

“All properties will be architecturally designed, with appropriate landscaping and will blend seamlessly into the existing street scape.”

Mr Burgoyne said the CLP Government provided the land for the developments, reinforcing its commitment to increasing social housing availability.

“We collaborate with community housing providers to build and manage social housing on allocated land,” said Mr Burgoyne.

“Importantly, this project will deliver much needed new social housing for Alice Springs.”

Construction is already underway on eight SHAP-funded homes in Darwin’s northern suburbs, with work commencing in December 2024.
