Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated 81 years ago today.
Today on International Holocaust Remembrance Day we honour the six million Jewish lives taken in the Holocaust, and remember the many others persecuted and murdered simply because of who there were.
Today we also honour the survivors. Many chose to make Australia their home, setting up families here, making enormous contributions to our country and enriching our communities.
The promise born from the Holocaust is: never again. This carries particular weight after the horrific antisemitic attack in Bondi.
We must commit to rejecting antisemitism and all forms of hatred. Jewish Australians - and all Australians - belong in our country. Everyone deserves to live here in safety.
I look forward to attending a commemorative event tonight at @emanuelsynagogue, hosted by @sydneyjewishmuseum. The focus of the event this year will be "Bridging Generations", a reflection on how we remember the Holocaust today in the shadow of contemporary antisemitism.
