Dame Marie Bashir’s extraordinary service spanned culture, medicine, education, and public life in New South Wales.
As the first female Governor of NSW, she brought humanity and moral clarity to public life.
A talented young musician who chose medicine as a clinician and advocate, she championed mental health, children’s wellbeing and dignity for those too often overlooked.
As a leader, she showed what it looks like to serve with intellect, grace and deep compassion.
Dame Marie believed that public service was not about status, but responsibility: a responsibility to listen, to include, and to lift others up.
She set a standard that can guide us today.
I am grateful to have learned from her example.
My thoughts are with her family and loved ones. May she continue to inspire care, courage and kindness in public life.
