Since the 2022 election, House of Representatives parliamentary committees have handed down 78 reports covering important issues from domestic violence to plastic pollution and gambling harm. The Government is supposed to respond within six months - but their track record is not good:
Only 4 were responded to on time, 17 were late and 57 have received no response at all. That's no response to inquiries that the government itself set up.
This is completely unjustifiable.
When the government says they want to set up an inquiry to tackle a challenging policy issue, the least they can do is examine the recommendations and respond.
Not responding just fuels distrust - that governments set up inquiries to convince people they care about an issue, while cynically not actually planning to take any action.
Albanese said he wants to increase trust in government - this does absolutely the opposite.
