AMC Seeks External Adjudicators for Disciplinary Reviews
The ACT Government is calling for expressions of interest from qualified candidates to serve as external adjudicators at the Alexander Maconochie Centre. These independent roles are crucial for providing oversight of disciplinary matters, to uphold detainees’ human rights and support the fair and effective operation of the AMC.
The Corrections Management Act 2007 provides for independent reviews of disputed disciplinary decisions. External adjudicators perform a critical role, safeguarding the rights of detainees through their review of disciplinary decisions when requested.
Minister for Corrections, Dr Marisa Paterson said their oversight helps ensure disciplinary decisions are fair and appropriate.
“External adjudicators are essential for maintaining transparency and accountability within the AMC. Their work ensures our decisions are fair, just and aligned with human rights principles,” Dr Paterson said.
The government is seeking two adjudicators to ensure continuity and bring a diverse range of perspectives to the role when the existing adjudicators’ appointments expire later this year.
To be eligible for appointment as an adjudicator, candidates must be either:

Besides the adjudicators, ACT Corrective Services receives independent oversight by various agencies including the ACT Inspector of Custodial Services, Official Visitors, the ACT Human Rights Commission, the ACT Ombudsman, ACT Courts and Tribunal, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People’s Commissioner, and through coronial inquiries.
