Eighty years ago the war came to our shores | Anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin
Eighty years ago, the war came to our shores.
Sailors in Darwin Harbour looked up to admire what they mistook for a friendly formation.
By the time the sirens sounded, the bombs were already falling.
Death didn’t discriminate between soldiers with guns, or post office workers huddled together in a ditch.
Over Japan’s nearly two-year campaign and 64 air raids, Darwin responded with courage, resilience and resolve.
Survivors lived with memories, but not the small mercy of them fading over the years.
Today we remember the defenders of Darwin.
Lest we forget.
