Archibald Prize Officially Opens At Araluen Arts Centre

Australia’s favourite portraiture exhibition – the Archibald Prize – has officially opened at the Araluen Arts Centre in Alice Springs, marking a major cultural highlight for the region.

On tour from the Art Gallery of New South Wales, this is the first time in the prize’s 100-year history that the prestigious portrait exhibition has toured to the Red Centre.

The exhibition features 57 portraits of notable Australians from all walks of life including artists, activists, sportspeople and community leaders, painted by some of the country’s most talented emerging and established artists.

Visitors will have the chance to see the 2024 Archibald Prize-winning portrait of Tim Winton by Laura Jones, along with the Packing Room Prize and People’s Choice Award winners, and a striking collection of works that capture the diversity and complexity of contemporary Australia.

The exhibition officially opened to the public today and will be on display until 15 June 2025, offering a once in a generation opportunity for Territorians to see Australia’s most celebrated portraiture exhibition in Alice Springs.

The exhibition will also include finalists in the Young Archie Mparntwe competition, where visitors can admire the local talents of young Territorians across four age categories.
