ASC Grant Boosting Women Leaders In Sport
AFLW field umpire Courtney Gibson says she feels supported to succeed after being named as one of 45 individuals to receive an Australian Sports Commission (ASC) Women Leaders in Sport (WLIS) individual grant, which aims to strengthen women's leadership and participation across the sector.
This year's grant recipients hail from 27 sports and will share in $200,000 in funding for education courses to help build their skills and become more confident leaders.
Working as an umpiring programs and regional specialist for WA Football, Gibson will study a communications short course at the University of New South Wales.
"This opportunity will strengthen my leadership progression by helping me communicate with more confidence, build genuine connections, and present with greater impact. I'm really excited for the chance to further develop my skills," she said.
Joining Gibson is 3-time World Champion and 2-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist in lawn bowls, Rebecca Van Asch.
Currently the High Performance Manager at Bowls Australia, Van Asch will be completing a Certificate IV in Elite Athlete Wellbeing Management, saying she is grateful, excited and curious to learn more.
"As a former athlete, it's important to me that our person first, player second philosophy remains central. This course will help strengthen how we support our athletes and ensure their wellbeing continues to be a priority."
An increase in demand for the WLIS leadership workshops will see two cohorts complete the program this year.197 women from across 42 sports have been selected to take part in the seven-week course which enhances leadership capability and builds connections for women across the sporting industry.
To date, the WLIS program which is managed by the ASC and funded by the Australian Government has supported more than 27,000 women and more than 800 sporting organisations.
