Coal is the biggest cause of climate change and Australia is the world’s biggest exporter of coal.
“But Australia contributes just 1.3% of global carbon dioxide emissions” some people cry. But consider this:
We emit more pollution than our fair share. Australia’s pollution-per-capita rate is one of the highest in the world (higher than big countries like the 🇺🇸US, 🇨🇳China and 🇮🇳India) largely due to our dependence on coal-fuelled electricity – we’re punching above our weight, and that’s not a good thing.
We’re also the world’s biggest exporter of coal. 80% of our coal is burned overseas. As a world-leading “coal dealer”, our coal is fuelling carbon emissions all over the world – and it doesn’t get added to “Australia’s emissions”.
The Conversation nails it here: “are we responsible for what other countries do with Australian coal? According to the Paris treaty, the answer is no. But drug barons and arms dealers use similar arguments to wash their hands of drug addiction and war.”
