Celebrating 50 Years of the Tasmanian Greens

On March 23rd 1972, a Hobart town hall meeting to save Tasmania’s Lake Pedder planted the seeds of the Green movement.

This week we’re celebrating 50 years of fighting for our precious places and a future for all of us.

Today, we are stronger than ever. A movement of people who care deeply about protecting nature, climate and community.

Lutruwita’s wilderness is truly special. It’s ecologically diverse and large. You could spend months lost in it and you can only truly appreciate the scale from the air.

It’s home to many of Australia’s most endangered and critically endangered species, including iconic fauna like the swift parrot, the Tasmanian devil and the wedge-tailed eagle.

This wilderness sparked the rise of the first Green movement, which rose in opposition to the unchecked actions of former Liberal and Labor state governments who wanted to destroy these wild places for profit.
