Natalie Lang “Put down your phones and lace up your boots”: Juanita Nielsen Lecture 2017
On October 10 2017, we hosted our annual Juanita Nielsen Memorial Lecture at the Surry Hills Community Centre.
Since 2001 Lee Rhiannon has hosted the annual Juanita Nielsen Memorial Lecture to commemorate the life and times of Juanita Nielsen and the Green Bans.
Natalie Lang was this year’s guest speaker. Natalie is the NSW Branch Secretary of the Australian Services Union. Natalie organised workers across NSW and the ACT in the union’s historic Equal Pay case which won pay increases of between 23 and 45% for social, community and disability services workers. Natalie is also an outspoken activist on the issue of Domestic Violence.
Juanita Nielsen was the publisher of the independent paper NOW and an active campaigner who disappeared in July 1975. It is widely thought that Juanita was kidnapped and murdered because of her stand against over development and local corruption.
