Nats dismiss Greens Santos CSG motion
Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon rises to move a motion around Santos coal seam gas project in Narrabri, and community protests around that project. The motion was:
That the Senate:
a) Notes that:
i) The Federal Government has approved coal seam gas mining in the Pilliga Forest near Narrabri in NSW, with Santos planning to develop an 850-well field;
ii) The Pilliga Push is an ongoing civil disobedience campaign against this mining led by the Gamilaraay and Gomeroi peoples, the Knitting Nannas and other grassroots action groups in NSW;
iii) The Narrabri coal seam gas project presents an unacceptable risk to the region’s groundwater and the Great Artesian Basin; and
b) Calls on:
i) The Federal Government to condemn the NSW Police Force’s use of pepper spray against the protesters; and
ii) The Federal Government to withdraw its approval of the Narrabri coal seam gas project.
Nationals Senator John Williams rose to make this statement of reply.
The Liberals, Nationals, Labor, Senator Wang and Senator Leyonhjelm all voted against the motion. Senator Lambie left the room and did not vote.
