Senator Rhiannon questions Govt about university donations to political parties

Last week the NSW auditor-general called on NSW universities to ban donations to political parties.

Over the past four years, the University of Wollongong has donated more than $25,000 to major political parties. More than $21,000 of this has been given to the NSW and federal branches of the Liberal Party.

In Senate estimates, Senator Rhiannon asked the Assistant Minister for Education Senator Birmingham and the Education and Employment Legislation Committee if they can rule out that no public money has been used by universities to make political donations. They were unable to do so.

They also admitted they had no process in place to monitor if public money given to universities are used to make political donations.

The Greens want state and federal governments to immediately move to prohibit Universities using public money for political donations.
