South Sudan peace agreement
On June 27, the President of the Republic of South Sudan, General Salva Kiir Mayardit, and his former vice-president and current armed opposition leader, Dr Riek Machar Teny signed an agreement with high expectations for ending five years of deadly conflict in the world’s youngest nation. The civil war has devastated South Sudan, taking thousands of lives and leaving more than four million people displaced within and outside the country.
I commend this important step towards peace. I would also like to acknowledge the community-led reconciliation efforts that have taken place in the diaspora, including the South Sudan Australia Peace Initiative.
