Meet Matt Smith, Labor’s new member for Leichhardt. Matt is a former Cairns Taipan and a long-term Cairns local. Basketball brought Matt Smith to Cairns two decades ago, playing for the Taipans for five years before he finished his NBL career in 2009.
Since then, Cairns has been home for Matt. It’s where he met his partner, Renee, and where he is raising his two daughters. Matt is a believer in the power of community and strives to be a part of that through his work and volunteering.
Matt’s work representing public sector workers has seen him travelling to various areas across Cairns, Cape York and the Torres Strait. He also holds voluntary basketball clinics with local schools and community groups across FNQ.
Through this work, Matt has seen firsthand the pressure families are under and the need to build good, secure jobs in Far North Queensland. Matt is proud to be a part of a team that has delivered a tax cut to every taxpayer, that is investing in a future made here and is ensuring Queenslanders are earning more and keeping more of what they earn.
Matt Smith has never shied away from hard work, and he wants to work hard for Far North Queensland. As the representative for Leichhardt in an Albanese Labor Government, Matt will be a strong voice for the region. Welcome to the Labor team, Matt!
