On this day in 1975, the Dismissal by Governor-General Sir John Kerr drew a line under the extraordinary Prime Ministership of Gough Whitlam.
The Whitlam Government introduced Medibank, established free tertiary education, returned traditional lands in the Northern Territory to the Gurindji people, legislated the Racial Discrimination Act, established Legal Aid, abolished the death penalty, and ended Australia’s involvement in Vietnam.
This December marks 50 years since the ‘It’s Time’ campaign swept Whitlam and Labor to power, launching this extraordinary legacy.
