Two days after James Scullin’s cabinet was sworn in, news of the Wall Street Crash of 1929 reached Australia. Scullin oversaw a difficult period for Australia as the Great Depression took hold. Despite this, the Scullin government’s achievements were significant. It unified State Premiers to tackle the Depression via The Premiers’ Plan, created a telephone line to Britain and established the ABC.
