Barbecue Safety Campaign Heats Up This Long Weekend

A Cook Government campaign is encouraging Western Australians to use their gas barbecues safely this long weekend and beyond to avoid the risk of serious injury from incorrect cylinder connections.

In the past three years, the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety (Building and Energy Division) has investigated 27 incidents involving gas barbecues including seven where people suffered burns. Some were caused by incorrect connections including the use of an adaptor that is now prohibited.

The three-month ‘Make the right connection’ campaign is reminding grillers that two types of LPG cylinders are available for barbecues. Cylinders with traditional POL valves are being phased out in favour of a much safer design called LCC27.

Barbecues purchased in the past four years must only be used with LCC27 cylinders. Attempting to connect a newer appliance to an older POL cylinder can cause gas to leak and ignite.

LPG retailers must now display signs and label each cylinder to help consumers choose the correct valve type when they buy or exchange a gas bottle.

As stated by Commerce Minister Dr Tony Buti:

“This campaign is part of the Cook Government’s commitment to the safety of all Western Australians. While a backyard barbecue is an ideal way to bring friends and families together, particularly over a summer long weekend, we want people to be safe when using gas appliances.

“If you have a newer barbecue, don’t be tempted to reach into the shed for an old gas bottle. The consequences could be disastrous.

“A newer type of LPG cylinder valve, LCC27, has important safety features that reduce the risk of gas leaks and fires.

“If you have a newer barbecue, only connect it to a cylinder with an LCC27 valve. POL valves can still be used with older barbecues, but they will be phased out in a few years as these cylinders reach the end of their lifespan.”
