Barkly, Central Australia Brace for Severe Weekend Weather

The NT Emergency Service is urging residents and visitors in the Barkly and Central Australia regions to prepare now ahead of heavy rain, severe weather and potential flooding this weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised that heavy and locally intense rainfall is expected across the regions, with the potential for dangerous flash flooding.

In response to the forecast and following recent flash flooding in the area NT Emergency Service has deployed additional staff and volunteers from Darwin to support local crews if required.

NT Emergency Service, Deputy Chief Officer Adam White said teams are actively preparing for the situation and reminds the community how quickly conditions could change during periods of heavy rainfall.

"Dangerous flash flooding is unpredictable by nature and can develop very rapidly," he said.

"In some cases, water levels can rise in a matter of minutes, which doesn't allow much time to prepare once impacts begin."

"However, these are exactly the kinds of conditions our staff and volunteers train for."

"We are resourced, equipped and ready to respond, and we have taken a precautionary approach to make sure additional support is available if needed."
