Bayside’s New Urban Wetlands

On Tuesday 22 July, we met with members of the Yalukit Willam Nature Association (YWNA) Committee at the southern end of Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve (YWNR). Together we walked through the future wetlands site, a usual practice for Council officers to regularly meet with YWNA to discuss the reserve project.

Commencing construction on the wetlands stage of the reserve’s masterplan vision is another huge project milestone for the reserve’s transformation.

Occupying 40% of the reserve’s footprint, the considered and detailed wetlands design is endorsed by Melbourne Water (the reserve’s managing water authority), and adheres strictly to the Melbourne Water Constructed Wetlands Design Manual.

The creation of the diverse and healthy eco-system will thrive with over 200,000 new terrestrial and aquatic plants, and 1,900 new trees.

The wetlands will provide extensive food and shelter opportunities for permanent and migratory fauna, with increased stopover-times already being observed.

The wetland is also increasing stormwater storage capacity, and even when full, the increased volume of the wetlands will slow the release of excess water and help to reduce flood risk.

While all efforts have been taken to minimise the removal of existing tress and planting from the former golf course, the extensive specialist tree impact assessment identified the flora species that would inhibit the growth of the indigenous vegetation communities, as well as all species impacted by earthworks and the wetland environment. Exotic species and declared weed species (e.g. Cypress trees) are also being removed.

Wherever possible, we’re retaining suitable felled flora onsite, and repurposing trees, logs and branches for landscaping and habitat creation.

Throughout all YWNR project stages, we’ve consulted closely with YWNA, Melbourne Water, Viva Energy Australia, and the former YWNR Advisory Committee to transform the former golf course into an urban oasis.

This leading urban ecology project will be ready to welcome visitors from March 2026, and we’re proud to deliver the Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve in collaboration with the community, and thanks to the Australian Government for its funding support.
