Bright Future Ahead Of King Island Dairy
The iconic King Island Dairy cheese brand will continue to be a staple in thousands of households for years to come with the Dairy returning to Australian ownership – securing hundreds of King Island jobs.
The announcement comes after the Tasmanian Government had been unrelenting in its search for a buyer who would ensure that King Island cheese remains a part of the fabric of Tasmanian industry.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff said first and foremost, he thanks King Islanders for never giving up.
“The King Island community have their own special brand of resilience and
belief in themselves” the Premier said.
“It’s in their DNA.
“Today is a great day for the entire King Island community. The saving of the Dairy means so much to so many people.
“The flow on effects are so meaningful to the employees, the contractors, local businesses, the tourism industry, the local school and health services.
“Almost to the day one year ago, I made a commitment that this Dairy would not close on my watch. And today, because of everyone working together in unity, I stand here to honour that promise.
“We have worked tirelessly to find the right buyer – exploring every possible avenue – one that would ensure the long-term future of this Dairy on the Island.
“Today I stand here with Graeme Wilson and Nick Dobromilsky, the soon to be new Australian owners of the dairy – and custodians of the iconic King Island cheese brand.
“It is a brand that has put this Island on the map.
“And now, the future of the King Island Dairy and the brand is bright.
“Like we always do as Tasmanians – we stand up and fight.
“Not only will King Island Dairy remain open and continue employing locals on the Island for years to come – the Dairy and brand will be coming back into Australian hands.
“To now stand here and shake the hands of Graeme and Nick as they embark on this exciting new chapter is one of my proudest moments in over two decades in parliament and a moment I’ll always remember.”
