California Eyes New Global Seafood Markets

March 13, 2025 · Moncton, New Brunswick · Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

Expanding into new international markets strengthens Canada’s economy, reduces reliance on traditional trade partners, and opens more opportunities for growth. It helps Canadian businesses scale up, create more jobs, and develop innovative products and services to compete globally.

Opening new doors for Atlantic Canada’s fish and seafood industry

A delegation of 48 Atlantic Canadian companies will showcase their products at Seafood Expo North America (SENA) from March 16-18, highlighting Atlantic Canada’s competitive advantage in the global fish and seafood industry. With suppliers and buyers from over 50 countries participating in this international event, SENA serves as a platform for expanding international markets, attracting investment, and boosting Canada’s global competitiveness in the industry.

This is particularly important given the significant role the fish and seafood industry plays in Atlantic Canada’s economy. In 2024, the region exported $6.1 billion in seafood to over 90 countries, with more than 65% of those exports going to the U.S. The industry also supported over 24,275 jobs, many in rural and coastal communities, demonstrating the far-reaching impact of global trade on local economies.

This initiative aligns with the Atlantic Trade and Investment Growth Strategy and supports the Atlantic Growth Strategy’s goals of fostering innovation, export growth, and strong global partnerships. It demonstrates the shared commitment of the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic provincial governments to help businesses connect with new markets, building a more resilient and interconnected economy for the future.
