Canada Post Secures Extra Funds for 2025-26 Fiscal Year
Canada Post is a critical national service that connects Canadians from coast to coast to coast, serving as a lifeline for rural, remote, and northern communities and as a key partner for small and medium-sized businesses that depend on affordable mail and parcel delivery to grow and compete in the economy.
That is why the Government of Canada is taking concrete action to ensure postal services continue without disruption. Today, the government announced its intention to make up to $1.01 billion in repayable funding available to Canada Post in the 2025-26 fiscal year to help the Corporation maintain its solvency and keep services running for Canadians as it faces ongoing financial pressures.
This funding, which would be provided on an as-needed basis to cover non-discretionary obligations and fully repaid by Canada Post, serves as a short-term financial bridge to protect service continuity, while building on the repayable funding of up to $1.034 billion announced in January 2025.
While Canada Post's legislated mandate requires it to be financially self-sustaining, the Corporation has accumulated significant losses in recent years, making clear that maintaining the status quo is not an option and that a clear plan is needed to restore long-term stability.
For that reason, the Government of Canada has instructed Canada Post to begin a multi-year transformation, informed by the recommendations of the Industrial Inquiry Commission, aimed at modernizing operations, strengthening financial performance, and ensuring the Corporation can continue delivering for Canadians well into the future.
This temporary support ensures Canadians continue to receive reliable postal services today, while the necessary reforms move forward to secure Canada Post's long-term viability.
