Cheaper Insurance For Tasmanian Tourism Operators

Cheaper Insurance For Tasmanian Tourism Operators

Tourism operators will be able to invest more in growing their businesses and showcasing Tasmania under a re-elected Liberal Government, instead of paying skyrocketing insurance premiums.

TasInsure will offer affordable insurance for our tourism operators, particularly in our regional communities.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff stated that rising insurance costs are placing immense pressure on tourism businesses and the communities they support.

“The market has failed our regional operators, and for too long, they’ve been paying mainland premiums for mainland insurance claims,” Premier Rockliff said.

“As Tourism Minister, I’ve travelled around the State and the thing I hear the most from our tourism industry is how crippling insurance costs are on their business.

“We have called for a national approach to this for some time now, with no action from the Federal Government, which is why we are stepping in to support the Tasmanian tourism industry with a Tasmanian solution.

“More than half of all jobs on Tasmania’s East Coast are dependent on tourism, and TasInsure will make it easier for tourism operators to turn a profit and employ more people.

“Whether you’re running a guided tour company or a local event, you deserve access to fair and reliable insurance at a Tasmanian price.

“Small businesses will save about 20% on their insurance, and TasInsure will be there for those hard-working operators who are being denied insurance at all by our mainland.

“TasInsure will be game-changing for our small businesses, giving them confidence and conditions they need to grow and thrive.

“It will be cheaper, fairer, ours.”

Tourism Industry Council Tasmania CEO Amy Hills said that while rising premiums are putting real pressure on tourism businesses, some are struggling to access insurance at all.

“For some of our operators, especially those in nature-based, adventure tourism, or remote and high-risk environments, the issue isn’t just the cost of insurance, it’s actually being able to access it in the first place,” Ms Hills said.

“Operators are telling us that they’re often left with only one provider willing to insure them, if any, and that lack of competition means they face exorbitant premiums or risk operating without cover at all.

“TICT has been raising this issue with both the State and Federal Governments for several years now, and we welcome any initiative that acknowledges and seeks to address the cost and accessibility of insurance for our sector.”
