CLP Government Boosts Support For Youth Parliament

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is proud to increase support for the Northern Territory Youth Parliament program, committing $150,000 over the next three years, helping more young people, especially those from regional and remote communities, participate in this important leadership and civic education program.

Delivered by the Y Northern Territory, the Youth Parliament is a program run by young people, for young people. It provides a platform for Territorians aged 15 to 25 to engage with democratic processes, build leadership and teamwork skills, and raise the issues that matter to their communities.

Minister for Youth, Seniors and Equality Jinson Charls said that as part of our year of action, certainty and security, the CLP Government is proud to empower young Territorians and drive greater engagement and equality of opportunity.

“Young people are full of energy, ideas and optimism and we want to make sure they have every chance to help shape the Territory’s future,” Mr Charls said.

“Youth Parliament helps our next generation grow into confident, engaged citizens. By expanding access and supporting regional participation, we’re ensuring young people from all corners of the Territory can seize this opportunity.”

The 2025 Youth Parliament brings together 36 participants from across the Territory including Darwin, Palmerston, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Alpurrurulam.

Throughout the year, participants develop and draft Youth Bills based on real-world issues. In September, they will debate their bills in Parliament House, demonstrating the power of youth voices in shaping policy discussions.

The Territory Government’s increased funding will enhance the reach and sustainability of the program, making it more inclusive and accessible, particularly for those in remote and underrepresented areas.

Emma Bunting, Chief Executive Officer of the Y Northern Territory, welcomed the Government’s investment.

“Youth parliament is not just a leadership program for young people, it is an experience that has the power and ability to positively impact the trajectory of a young person’s life, with many alumni in the NT and across Australia, making a real difference in communities today,” said Ms Bunting.

“Youth Parliament amplifies the voices of young people on issues that matter to them. The impact of this program is far-reaching, beyond learning a new skill focussed on civic education and engagement.”

“I’m really proud of our program and the Youth Parliament team, as we have a strong commitment and focus on ensuring all young people, no matter where they live or what their background is, have the opportunity to participate in Youth Parliament, to ensure we have a diverse representation from right across the Territory.”

The Youth Parliament program is the Y’s flagship youth leadership initiative and has a proud history across Australia dating back to 1963.
