Construction Begins on Launceston Regional Bus Hub

Construction has begun on the new Launceston regional bus transit centre, marking an exciting step forward for the project.

Minister for Transport, Eric Abetz, said the new transit centre would deliver significant benefits for regional passengers while providing connectivity to the Launceston CBD and broader bus network.

“The new transit centre, located at 25 St John Street, has been purpose-designed with passenger comfort front-of-mind,” Minister Abetz said.

“Construction has started and is being delivered by Anstie Constructions – a proud Launceston construction company.

“It will deliver a modern transit centre which meets the needs of passengers while offering a long-term solution for Launceston public transport.”

Liberal Member for Bass, Michael Ferguson, said the new facility would include modern, accessible amenities such as indoor seating, toilets, and a ticketing and luggage check-in desk.

“Improving the traveller experience, particularly through Tasmania’s colder winter, is vital to ensuring passengers can get from A to B comfortably,” Mr Ferguson said.

“Passengers will soon be able to wait for their buses in a warm, safe, and weatherproof environment.

“It is pleasing to see this project progressing after the Tasmanian Government stepped in to secure a long-term solution for public transport in Launceston following the disappointing closure of the privately-owned Cornwall Square Transit centre.

“Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future we’re prioritising key infrastructure projects so we can keep Tasmania the best place to live, work and raise a family.”

Once completed in mid-2025, the new regional transit centre will replace the current temporary bus stop on the corner of Charles and William Streets.

This new transit centre will become the new departure point for services between Launceston and Devonport, Hobart, Mole Creek, and the state’s East Coast.
