Continuing To Build Tasmania’s Strong Justice System
Two new Bills have passed the Tasmanian Parliament, the TASCAT (Additional Jurisdictions) Bill 2025 and the Justice Miscellaneous (Administrative Review Tribunal) Bill 2024.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Guy Barnett said the passing of these Bills highlights the Government’s strong record of legislative reform.
The TASCAT (Additional Jurisdictions) Bill 2025 will enhance the administration of Justice by providing dispute resolution in a timelier manner.
Applications to the administrative Appeals Division of the Magistrate Courts will be transferred to the Tribunal’s jurisdiction, in line with other jurisdictions in Australia.
Furthermore, the Bill includes a legislative response to recommendation 18.13 of the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s Response to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings, enabling TASCAT to review decisions under the Registration to Work with Vulnerable People Act 2013.
The Justice Miscellaneous (Administrative Review Tribunal) Bill 2024 will ensure that all references to the Federal Tribunal, and references to the laws that govern it, are up to date in Tasmanian law.
