Council Seeks Funds for Community Basketball Facility

Whitehorse City Council is advocating for strong community outcomes for sporting and recreational facilities in the lead-up to the 2025 Federal Election.

Among the top four community infrastructure priorities, endorsed by Council in July 2024, is the redevelopment of Nunawading Basketball stadium.

The stadium, now more than 55 years old, hosts more than 20,000 basketball games annually and welcomes more than one million visitors each year.

The existing five courts are at capacity.

Whitehorse City Council Mayor Andrew Davenport said the project is of national significance.

“The benefits of upgrading this facility go far beyond municipal boundaries, Nunawading is the home of one of the largest basketball associations in Australia but has reached maximum capacity with potential players sitting on waiting lists.

“They need to be supported to grow.

“That is why this project is a top priority for the Council. We’ve committed $35 million to this $100 million+ project with the expectation that other levels of government will also contribute.

“Within Whitehorse, basketball is by far our fastest growing indoor sport. We’ve already got the ball rolling and are currently completing the feasibility study and concept designs for the Nunawading Indoor Sports Centre.”

Council has welcomed other funding commitments during the Federal Election campaign period, including:
