Crime Reduction Strategy Delivering For Territorians

The latest crime statistics confirm that the Finocchiaro CLP Government’s strong action on crime is delivering real results for Territorians.

Declan’s Law came into effect on 6 January 2025, and its impact has been immediate.

The number of adults on bail has dropped by 5 per cent, from 1,898 on 6 January to 1,807 on 10 March.

During the same period, the number of adults on remand has increased by 18 per cent, from 1,136 to 1,338.

Figures released today show that Territory-wide between December 2024 and January 2025; robbery, extortion and related offences were down 32 per cent, house break-ins were down 27 per cent, alcohol-related assaults were down 17 per cent, and domestic violence assaults were down 11 per cent.

Commercial break-ins were up 17 per cent month-on-month.

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said the figures highlighted the effectiveness of the government’s commitment to tackling crime head-on.

“Our plan is delivering action, certainty, and security for Territorians,” said Mrs Finocchiaro.

“We promised to restore law and order, and that’s exactly what we are doing. These results show that our policies are making a real difference but there is much more work to do.

“The CLP is committed to a safer Territory, and we will continue to take strong action to keep our communities secure and give our police better powers.

“Since coming to office, we’ve put more than 600 offenders behind bars – people who should never have been on our streets in the first place.”

With crime rates trending downward, the Finocchiaro CLP Government remains focused on strengthening community safety, supporting police, and ensuring that offenders are held accountable.

“The job is not done, this is just the beginning,” said Mrs Finocchiaro.

“Territorians deserve to feel safe, and under a CLP Government, they can have confidence that we are delivering real action.”

Next week in Parliament, the CLP Government will debate and pass the Police Administration Amendment Bill 2025.

This legislation will grant police express power to enter private property for Domestic Violence Order compliance checks while maintaining individual rights by ensuring police cannot enter a dwelling without consent.

“We back our police and want them to feel confident in their role of protecting the community, knowing they have the full support of the government,” said Mrs Finocchiaro.

This new law is part of the CLP Government’s broader Reducing Crime reforms, which include Declan’s Law, mandatory sentencing for repeat violent offenders, a youth crime crackdown, and expanded police powers.

The CLP Government is delivering action – not excuses – to restore law and order and ensure a safer Northern Territory for all.
