Daly River: Evacuate Now Amid Flood Alert 7 February

ADVICE TO THE PUBLIC:

MODERATE FLOODING OCCURRING ALONG THE DALY RIVER AT DALY RIVER POLICE STATION, MAJOR FLOODING POSSIBLE FROM MONDAY

Moderate to locally heavy rainfall has been observed across the Daly River catchment over the last week, causing river level rises. Minor flooding has eased along the Katherine River at Nitmiluk Centre, and river levels along the Fergusson River are falling. Further downstream, river levels are rising along the Daly River with the main flood peak now around Beeboom Crossing.

Moderate flooding is rising slowly at Daly River Police Station. The river level may reach the major flood level from Monday, with a prolonged peak around the major flood level possible from Tuesday.

Further showers and storms are forecast over the next few days. Widespread significant rainfall is not expected, however small additional river level rises are possible. The situation will continue to be closely monitored and this warning will be updated as required.

Daly River above Douglas River:

River levels are elevated along the Daly River and tributaries upstream of the Douglas River, including at Dorisvale Crossing.

Fergusson River:

River levels are elevated along the Fergusson River and tributaries.

Lower Daly River:

Moderate flooding is rising slowly along the Daly River at Daly River Police Station, with elevated river levels upstream at Beeboom Crossing and Mount Nancar.

The Daly River at Daly River Police Station is currently at 13.49 m and rising slowly, with moderate flooding. The Daly River at Daly River Police Station may reach the major flood level (14.00 m) from Monday. Further small rises are possible as upstream flows arrive, with a prolonged peak around the major flood level possible from Tuesday. Forecast heights and timings will be refined as upstream peaks are observed.

Safety Advice:

Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous.

Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.

Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads.

Check the ABC and local media for updates. The situation can change quickly, so stay informed.
