This visit was meant to show solidarity after a terror attack that shocked our country.
It was a ceremonial state visit, grounded in respect for victims and support for the Australian Jewish community, not a political rally.
Instead, an unlawful march pushed through police barricades, ignored lawful directions, and filled our streets with chants like "Globalise the intifada" and "From the river to the sea".
Australians believe in free expression. But protest does not give licence to intimidation, disorder, or the targeting of communities.
When a state visit following a terror attack is met with chants widely understood as calling for violence against Jews, it should concern every Australian, regardless of politics.
Australia must do better.
