Sharing some of the feedback from my community survey over the weekend of people in the ACT on the Govt’s new proposed laws which will now be split into two bills before parliament tomorrow:

– Hate speech (minus racial vilification) & migration changes

– Customs & firearms changes (including expanded background checks & national gun buyback scheme)

It’s clear people want action but have concerns about going too fast and getting it wrong – especially when it comes to freedom of expression and making sure new protections apply to everyone.

I’m trying to move a series of amendments in the time available, including one to send the split out hate speech & migration bill off to a committee so there is more time to scrutinise, make much needed changes and see if the bill is passable.

I still haven’t got the updated split bills but at this point can’t see how I could support hate speech changes based on the feedback I’ve received.
