Delivering More Support For Tasmanian Families

Delivering More Support For Tasmanian Families

Even more women’s health services will be delivered under a re-elected Tasmanian Liberal Government, with access to be expanded for vital perinatal mental health services across the State.

As part of our comprehensive Women’s Health Strategy, we will deliver a four-year program for graduate positions in Perinatal Mental Health at Gidget House services in Tasmania.

Gidget House provides free, specialist perinatal face-to-face and telehealth counselling services for expectant and new parents, and support for women and their partners who have experienced birth trauma, pregnancy related loss, or are going through assisted reproduction.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the Tasmanian Liberals are committed to enabling more access to Gidget House services in Tasmania to support the emotional wellbeing of expectant and new parents.

“This investment will support eight graduate positions per year to work under supervision, increasing the support available in Tasmania and reducing wait times for families in Hobart and Launceston,” Premier Rockliff said.

“The Gidget House expansion is an investment in our future health practitioners and will equip students to deliver evidence-based compassionate care, benefiting our health services for years to come.

“Our Government will also continue to strongly advocate to the Australian Labor Government for a Gidget House presence in the North-West, and in the meantime, North West women and families can access Gidget’s telehealth services with a referral from their GP.”

Our Government also launched the Tasmanian Parent Support Line last year, providing advice on baby settling, feeding, and post-natal mental health via 1300 TAS BUB (1300 827 282) from 7am to 11pm daily. This includes a Virtual Care component state-wide.

Our comprehensive package under the Liberals’ Women’s Health Strategy will deliver better supports and health services for Tasmanian women, including:

• Making access to fertility treatment more affordable with a new subsidy to help more women fulfil their dream of having children.

• Restoring the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery at the University of Tasmania.

• Deliver the new six-bed Intensive Residential Parenting Unit at St John’s Park, New Town.

• Establish four new permanent BreastScreen clinics in Kingborough, Devonport, Triabunna, and Glenorchy.

• Provide scholarships for Registered Nurses to upskill and gain their Master of Nurse Practitioners qualification.

• Increase employment opportunities for Nurse Practitioners by incentivising private practices to grow their workforce, particularly in rural and regional areas.

• Release a new Tasmanian Midwifery Strategy to address workforce retention, capacity, capability and birth trauma.

• Enable Family Planning Tasmania to deliver outreach across the State at all Child and Family Learning Centres and identify space within Stage 2 of the Kingston Community Centre.

• Delivering a new surgical robot for gynaecological and other procedures at the LGH;

• Building a new diagnostic Tasmanian Breast Care Centre in Hobart.

• Extend women’s health services in Launceston by enabling The Bubble to expand; and

• Subsidising community pharmacists to extend their scope of practice to treat common conditions, such as UTIs.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said a majority Liberal Government is the only way to keep Tasmania moving forward with certainty, stability, and efficiency.

“This election comes down to one choice: a strong Liberal team with a real plan or another merry-go-round of chaos,” Premier Rockliff said.

“Let’s get on with it.

“Let’s finish the job for Tasmania.”
