The Tasmanian Government is introducing landmark reforms to strengthen governance, transparency and accountability across Government Business Enterprises.
Treasurer and Deputy Premier, Guy Barnett, today tabled the Government Business Governance Reforms Bill 2025 in Parliament, marking the next step to improve the way government-owned businesses are managed.
“Government Business Governance Reform is of paramount importance to our Government, and the future prosperity of Tasmanians,” Treasurer Barnett said.
“These landmark reforms will ensure Government businesses work in the best interests of Tasmanians by operating with clear oversight, strong transparency, and modern governance expectations.
“As part of the Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we are growing our economy and creating jobs, and making Tasmania the best place to live, work, raise a family, do business and invest.”
The Bill follows extensive public and stakeholder consultation, with 48 submissions received in response to the initial draft plan, and a further 13 submissions during the consultation on the draft Bill. Feedback has informed key improvements to the legislation.
Key features of the Bill include:
“These changes will help drive better performance and accountability, while enhancing public trust in how government businesses operate,” the Treasurer said.
A second tranche of reforms will follow the 2025-26 State Budget.
“These reforms will position Tasmania’s Government businesses to deliver better value, with clearer expectations and stronger oversight and above all, responsive to the needs of Tasmanians,” Treasurer Barnett said.
