Faster Access To Medication, Shorter Wait Times For ADHD Patients

Faster Access To Medication, Shorter Wait Times For ADHD Patients

Faster, fairer and more accessible support for Tasmanians with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) will be delivered under a re-elected Tasmanian Liberal Government.

Our Government will enable Tasmanian GPs to diagnose, treat and manage ADHD for both children and adults, allowing faster access to medication, reduced costs for patients, and better continuity of care.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said demand for ADHD support has risen sharply across the nation, and we’re getting on with delivering high-quality ADHD care for Tasmanians.

“This will be a game changer for Tasmanian families, slashing wait times for assessments, cutting medical costs, and ensuring lifelong ADHD care that’s easier to access and coordinate right across the State,” the Premier said.

“Every Tasmanian, young and old, deserves access to timely, high-quality ADHD support, no matter where they live or how they seek care.

“Tasmanian families deserve a health system that recognises the importance of early intervention and delivers real solutions for those living with ADHD, and a re-elected Tasmanian Liberal Government will deliver exactly that.

“We will work closely with GPs and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners to ensure GPs have the training and supervision they need to support Tasmanians living with ADHD, freeing up wait lists for paediatricians and psychiatrists.

“Tasmanians want action. They want stability. And they want it now.

“That’s what our Liberal Team is offering: a clear plan, a united team, and the leadership to get on with it.

“Let’s get on with it.

“Let’s finish the job for Tasmania.”

This initiative will build on our newly established ADHD Clinic for children, which began in April 2025 for neurodevelopmental assessment and management, supported by a $3 million funding commitment.

In addition, a re-elected Tasmanian Government will table amendments to the Poisons Act 1971 and the Poisons Regulations 2018 by the end of the year, allowing interstate prescriptions to be dispensed in Tasmania, further supporting those with ADHD.

We will also draft new, contemporary legislation to regulate medicines in Tasmania, allowing appropriate access while protecting public health and safety, and partner with community pharmacies to strengthen the Tasmanian Pharmacy Control Act 2001.
