Finocchiaro CLP Secures Test Cricket's Territory Future
1 February 2026
Territory set to host first international test cricket game in over two decade.
The latest in a huge slate of major sporting events - a show of confidence in the Territory sport and tourism industries, and the Finocchiaro CLP Government's hard work to rebuild the economy.
A big win for local businesses, tourism operators, and sporting clubs.
Cricket tragics and budding sport stars are set to reach fever pitch as the Finocchiaro CLP Government secures the first international Test match to be played in the Top End in 23 years.
The 2026 Test match will see Australia take on Bangladesh in August, at Marrara Stadium - the first in a multi-match deal struck this week, which include the Test match along with two T20 internationals in 2027.
The announcement comes after the Government's success in hosting two jam-packed T20 International games last year against South Africa, which generated $4.25 million in economic activity.
Minister for Tourism and Hospitality and Minister for Major Events, Hon Marie-Clare Boothby welcomed the announcement as a win for the Northern Territory, and as proof that confidence in the Territory's visitor economy was continuing to climb.
"Last year was a landmark year for sport and major events in the Territory. This year will knock it out of the ground, with international test cricket in August another in a long run of world-class events to come," Minister Boothby said.
"As we work hard to grow our visitor economy, events like these act as catalysts - attracting visitors from all over the world, filling our restaurants and pubs; touring our unique parks and sites; and helping to put the Territory on the map."
Minister for People, Sport and Culture, Jinson Charls said Test cricket coming back to Darwin is fantastic news for the Territory and cricket fans alike.
"As a lifelong lover of the game, I know there's nothing quite like Test cricket. It's the ultimate test of skill, endurance and character, and to see it played again in Darwin speaks volumes about our facilities and our growing reputation as a destination for world-class sport.
"With Bangladesh coming to town, I know the Bangladeshi community will be especially excited, and this Test is a celebration of Darwin's proud multicultural community, united by a shared love of cricket.
"Having Territorian Jake Weatherald involved makes it even more special and shows young local players what's possible."
Cricket Australia CEO, Todd Greenberg, said he was proud to bring international cricket to the Northern Territory over the next two years - a chance to showcase cricket as Australia's national sport.
"Test cricket will return to Marrara Stadium meaning some of the world's best players will help inspire the next generation of NT cricketers.
"We would like to thank the Northern Territory Government for its commitment to cricket including their investment in infrastructure that will make the NT a significant location for international fixtures over the next two years."
Northern Territory Cricket CEO Gavin Dovey said he is absolutely thrilled that International Cricket will return in 2026.
"Australian's love affair with Test Cricket was clear to see throughout the recent Ashes so it's fantastic that Territorians will get to see Pat Cummins, Travis Head and Nathan Lyon in their own backyard.
"I would like to thank the Northern Territory Government and Cricket Australia for partnering with us and showcasing this beautiful part of the country to the billions of cricket fans around the world."
